I had a wonderful mentor who taught me what 20-hour days looked like, but also taught me competence, client management, perfection in drafting, and many other critical things. She left to go on the bench, and really there wasn’t anyone at that firm even close to her caliber, so after some hesitation I started my own firm. SaaS flat fee packages

Thanks to the kindness of several other lawyers, who sent me clients instead of potted plants, I was solvent after my first month, and really never looked back. One result of that was that I could choose the clients I wanted. I got a dud every now and then, but the worthwhile people let me be part of their team for years. When I retired, I still had the first client I ever got. I could afford to turn away people who were rude, malicious, all emotion and without courtesy or self-discipline, sexist, racist, or who just felt wrong. I did commit to take 12 pro bono cases a year from the state bar, but other than that, I was able to bring in enough cash flow to hire a few other lawyers and most importantly, never borrowed money to finance the firm. That meant I could retire when I wanted. I did so at 43 and sailed offshore for 7 years. By the end of that time, I was ruined for any sort of regimented life and became what I am now - a fulltime writer.
